[ARCHIVED SPRING 2012]
Club History
The UMBC Musical Theatre Club was founded in the Fall of 2006 by students Mikey Cafarelli and Kelly Fey. Prior to the club's creation, musical theatre was practically non-existent on campus and the club's creation brought a new dimension to the UMBC arts community. In Fall 2006, MTC had its first musical showcase, A Night at the Movies, which played in the Commons Sport Zone to a crowd of about 125 people. Following the success of the showcase, the club set out to mount a full musical production, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The show ran for 4 nights over a two-weekend period to an audience of UMBC students and other members of the community.
In just 5 years, the club has come a very long way. In Fall 2010, MTC put on its FIFTH annual showcase, [title of showcase]: Broadway in the New Millennium playing for a three night run in the Commons Sports Zone to a total audience of around 400. In the Spring, the club took on its biggest challenge to date, staging the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-Winning Musical RENT by Jonathan Larson. The expanded production team, including two set designers, a sound designer, and a lighting desinger (positions never before included by the MTC), along with the MTC Board, two directors, an assistant director, music and vocal directors, a costume designer, a stage manager, and a capable group of helpers and assistants, worked day and night to put on an amazing show that played to full audiences over a two weekend period in April of 2011. This was also the first time the University Center Ballroom was utilized as a location for two of the six performances.
In May 2011, the MTC accepted the Black and Gold Awards for "Best Weekend Event of the Year" for RENT and "Non-positional Leader of the Year Award" for member and 2011/2012 Vice President Will Poxon. This was a great honor for the club and marked the second and third awards in the club's short history (The first being the "Emerging Club of the Year Award" back in 2007 when the group was started).
We're now looking forward to a great new year in 2012/2013 after our successful productions in 2011/2012, including Broadway Backwards (our Fall showcase), [title of show], and Once Upon a Mattress!
